New Delhi : At least 39 rebels of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and a government soldier have been killed in fresh clashes in Sri Lanka’s war fatigued northern region.
Nine LTTE rebels were gunned down in three separate encounters at Kiribbanwewa in Welioya late Saturday while two others were killed at Parayanakulam in Vavuniya also yesterday, the Sri Lankan Defence Ministry said in a statement Sunday at Colombo.
In a clash at Muhamalai in Jaffna, one Sri Lankan soldier was killed yesterday, the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) said today. Three LTTE men were also killed in the same area last evening.
Two LTTE rebels were killed in Kokkuthuduwai and Janakapura areas of Jaffna yesterday, the Defence Ministry said.
Five rebels were killed at Vilathikulam in Vavuniya, the MCNS said. One rebel was killed at Kallikulam in Vavuniya yesterday.
In an army attack at Palamoddai in Vavuniya, six LTTE rebels were killed and nine others injured during the attack yesterday, the Defence Ministry said.
In Vavuniya’s Madhu south area, Sri Lankan soldiers killed six LTTE men yesterday. Five more LTTE rebels were killed in various areas of Nothern Sri Lanka yesterday, Press Trust of India reported today.
