Hyderabad : Ten fans of Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi, who were allegedly involved in an attack on actor Rajasekhar and his family members, surrendered here before the police Tuesday.
They, however, denied that they attacked the actor’s car Monday and said the vehicle collided with a truck as they were chasing him to demand an apology for his remarks on Chiranjeevi.
“Our intention was not to attack him. We chased him only to demand an apology,” one of the accused told journalists at Panjagutta police station, where a case was registered Monday following a complaint by Rajasekhar.
The accused claimed that they were waiting at the Nampally railway station when they learnt that the actor had got down at Secunderabad railway station and tried to stop him at Panjagutta.
“We tried to stop him but the car sped away towards Jubilee Hills. After sometime he came back and was going towards the police station. We again tried to stop him but he was in a hurry and hit a truck which damaged the windowpanes of the car,” said Ganesh, one of the accused.
All the accused were booked for rioting with deadly weapons, wrongful restraint, assault, damaging property, criminal intimidation and unlawful assembly.
Rajasekhar, his wife Jeevita and their two daughters were in the car when they were chased and attacked at Panjagutta. The actor and one of his daughters received minor injuries.
Jeevita later lodged a complaint with the police that the attackers were fans of Chiranjeevi and claimed they wanted to kill them.
The fans were angry over Rajasekhar’s remarks that he would not join any political party that Chiranjeevi would launch as he had no political experience.
Hours after the attack, Chiranjeevi reached Rajasekhar’s house and tendered an apology. He appealed to his fans not to resort to violence.
