Maputo : Mozambique government is forced to evacuate 10,000 people since Monday who refuse to leave their homes located in high-risk areas of floods.

According to the sub-director of the National Institute of Disaster Joao Ribeiro they are families living along Zambeze River’s valley which waters burst its banks.

Those people who rejected the government call are living in the provinces of Zambezia, Tete and Machanga, despite that in many cases their houses are flooded, noted Ribeiro.

They want to take care of their cattle and other belongings but our mission is to save all of those living in risky or flooded areas, said the official.

Flooding has destroyed homes and harvests as a result of which the humanitarian agencies are in critical conditions to provide victims with shelters, cleaning up and water.

The government has already evacuated 92,000 people while other 18 have died as a result of flooding.
