Radical Russian Opposition Fails to Register New Party

By Prensa Latina

Moscow : Radical Russian sectors that support former Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov (2004) failed to make a new opposition organization official.

The Federal Service of registration denied the request to make the recently-created People for Democracy and Justice Party, backed by Kasyanov, who was eliminated from the presidential race.

A party source quoted by the news agency Interfax pointed out that the measure has a political nature.

The leader of the opposition Democratic Popular Union failed to register his presidential candidacy before the CEC (Central Election Commission) due to a high number of signatures (13.38 percent) that were annulled as a result of fraud or technical errors.

By law, Kasyanov can appeal the ruling of the Supreme Court of Russia, although his spokesperson, Elena Dikun, said he would not do so.

CEC President Vladimir Churov told reporters on Monday that it is false that the Vladimir Putin administration had ordered not to register the opposition candidate, who is a staunch critic of the government and a protégé of the West.
