Three panels given six-month extensions

New Delhi : Three commissions on administrative reforms, nomadic tribes and economically backward classes were Wednesday granted extensions of six month each.

The cabinet, presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, approved the extensions, Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told reporters.

The three panels to get extensions are the second Administrative Reforms Commission (ARC) headed by senior Congress leader M. Veerappa Moily, the National Commission for Denotified Tribes and Semi-Nomadic and Nomadic Tribes, and the Commission for Economically Backward Classes.

The term of the second ARC has been extended for a period of six months and it has been allowed to submit its report anytime before Sep 30, Dasmunsi said.

The second ARC was set up to prepare a detailed blueprint for revamping the public administration system. “Implementation of its reports after due consideration is bound to improve service delivery,” the minister said.

After the commission presented an interim report last month, Congress circles were speculating that Moily could be inducted into the union cabinet in view of the Karnataka assembly elections that are due by May.

Chances of Moily’s induction in the cabinet appear to have receded with the extension given to the commission.

The cabinet also approved extending the term of the National Commission for De-notified Tribes and Semi-Nomadic and Nomadic Tribes for another six months. “The term of this commission was expiring on Feb 6 and has now been extended till Aug 5,” the minister said.

The cabinet also granted a six-month extension to the Commission for Economically Backward Classes not covered under the existing reservation policy for a period of six months. The term of this commission was expiring on Feb 1.

“The welfare measures recommended by the commission would benefit economically backward sections of society by giving them adequate representation in services,” said Dasmunsi.
