Jerusalem : An Israeli committee appointed to investigate the shooting incident at the farewell ceremony for French President Nicolas Sarkozy last week has concluded that the officer committed suicide, local daily Yedioth Ahronoth reported Tuesday.
The committee wrapped up their probe this past weekend and determined that the tragedy, in which Border Guard officer Raid Asaad Ghanan, 32, shot himself dead a few minutes before Sarkozy’s departure at the David Ben-Gurion Airport, was indisputably a suicide, said the report.
Upon hearing the shot, Sarkozy and his wife were rushed into their airplane, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and President Shimon Peres were quickly escorted into an armored vehicle.
Following the incident, family of the Druze officer said that they do not believe it was a suicide, and the police appointed the committee to investigate it and sent the body for autopsy.
