Eight policemen killed, arms smugglers held in Afghanistan

Kabul : At least eight policemen were killed in a Taliban insurgent attack on a check post in southern Afghanistan, while three suspected rebels were held for weapons smuggling in the southwest, officials said Friday.

The militants attacked the police check post in Panjwayi district in the southern province of Kandahar late Thursday night killing at least eight officers and injuring another, provincial police chief Mateuallah Khan said.

Meanwhile, a US military statement said that three rebels were detained Thursday during a coalition operation in in Baghram Chah district of the southwestern province of Helmand.

“The network is also involved in the smuggling of weapons, including machine guns and rockets,” the statement said.

Several weapons caches were discovered and destroyed to prevent future militant use, it added.

Another statement from US military base in Bagram said: “A coalition service member died here today from a non-combat injury.”

Taliban militants increased their attacks on Afghan and international troops in recent weeks especially in southern and southeastern provinces.
