Ulan Bator : The Mongolian authorities Saturday lifted a 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. curfew in downtown Ulan Bator, which was imposed after riots over alleged election fraud erupted in the capital city Tuesday.
Mongolia’s presidential press office said Saturday that the situation in the capital has calmed down and a four-day state of emergency in the city will be suspended midnight Saturday (1600GMT).
Mongolian parties, which hold seats in parliament, Friday agreed to deal with the recent riots by law, it added.
At a meeting initiated by Mongolian President Nambariin Enkhbayar, the parties including the Democratic Party, one of the organizers of Tuesday’s violent protest, agreed to charge the participants of the riots under the law, the office said.
The Democratic Party will take legal steps to ask the Mongolian General Election Commission for a recount of ballots in some of the election districts.
The Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party won the parliamentary elections held Sunday. But supporters of the Democratic Party and other parties staged a protest Tuesday against alleged voting fraud in the elections.
The protest soon turned into riots, with five people reportedly killed and more than 300 others injured. President Enkhbayar Tuesday declared the country’s first-ever state of emergency in the capital area starting from Wednesday.
