Iran Defends N-Energy Peaceful Use

Tehran : Iran reaffirmed its right to develop nuclear technology for peaceful end after meeting several requests to halt its uranium enrichment program.

The Foreign Ministry confirmed rejection by the government of President Mahmoud Admadinejad of US and European Union claims that Iran plans to develop weapons of mass destruction.

After Friday’s prayers, local church leaders backed official rejection of a package of grants from the US, China, France, Russia and the UK (Security Council members) plus the EU.

Irna News Agency that quoted an unidentified official who said the Iranian Ambassador to Belgium submitted the response to Javier Solana.

The local TV said Saturday that Iranian Nuclear Negotiator Saeed Khalili held Friday telephone talks with Solana.

The package Solana submitted last June calls Iran to trade six-week freeze of its N-program for six-week freeze of a third group of UN sanctions adopted in March and EU measures approved in June.

If Iran accepts they could negotiate a long-range agreement.
