New Delhi : India strongly condemned a suicide bomb attack on its embassy in Kabul, where 45 were killed, including the military attaché, Brigadier Ravi Datta Mehta, and more than 100 were wounded.
Casualties also included Counselor V. Venkateswara Rao and security guards Ajay Pathania and Roop Singh, of the border special police, who were responsible for protecting the embassy.
Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee said the car bomb attack, which also killed 41 Afghans, including a chauffeur of the embassy and people who were waiting outside to request visas, was despicable and coward.
The powerful explosion caused serious material damage on the embassy and nearby buildings, including the Afghan Interior Ministry.
Mukherjee held an urgent meeting with Defense Minister A.K. Antony and officials from the two ministries.
The government sent a team, headed by the secretary of Western Affairs at the Foreign Ministry, Nalin Surie, to investigate what happened and to coordinate the return of the bodies of the Indian personnel.
“Such acts of terrors will not stop our determination to comply with our commitments to the Afghan government and people,” Mukherjee noted.
