Kolkata : Terming the Left’s withdrawal of support to the Congress-led government a “face-saving formula” for the two parties, the Trinamool Congress Tuesday said the two would come together again after the next election.
Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, however, refused to spell out her party’s stand in the event of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) seeking a trust vote in the Lok Sabha.
“It’s good riddance. We are happy the Left has finally left national politics,” said Banerjee, who for long has been the main opposition voice in Left-ruled West Bengal.
But she added: “Dal mein kuch kala hai (Something is wrong somewhere). It’s a face-saving formula before the polls. Post elections I am sure they will again come together. We have to be prepared for that.”
Asked if the Trinamool would enter into a tie-up with the Congres, Banerjee said: “Our policy is to maintain equal distance from the Congress and BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party).”
Commenting on the Samajwadi Party’s decision to support the UPA, she said: “It is wrong for any party to give support to the Congress.”
And asked about her party’s attitude towards a confidence vote in parliament, she said: “We’re not slaves. We will decide our party’s stand after discussing the issue internally.”
She added that the people of West Bengal would get some relief now as the ruling Left Front would not get the support of the central government if it committed “atrocities” on opposition supporters.
“The Congress had turned a blind eye so far when the CPI-M was committing atrocities. Now, there is a possibility that will not be the case,” she said.
