Bhopal : The Madhya Pradesh assembly was adjourned Tuesday for the second consecutive day even as Leader of Opposition Jamuna Devi demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan over the violence across the state during a shutdown to protest cancellation of land allotment to the Amarnath shrine management.
Soon after Speaker Ishwar Das Rohani called the members for question hour, the opposition lawmakers raised the issue of communal riots in the state.
Devi said that a judicial inquiry be ordered to probe the matter “but before that the chief minister should resign”.
She demanded that the judge, who would be inquiring into the matter, should be appointed with the consent of the opposition.
When the speaker pointed out that no such matter could be raised or discussed during the question hour, Devi and former chief minister Digvijay Singh reiterated that they would not allow the house to run till their demand was not met.
The house witnessed uproarious scenes and it was adjourned till 11.30 a.m.
When the house re-assembled, the legislators of both the ruling party and the opposition raised slogans against each other on Indore riots issue.
While the Congress lawmakers raised slogans against the BJP regime accusing it of promoting “goonda raj”, the ruling BJP legislators charged the Congress with having links with the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).
Later, members of both groups trooped into the well and continued to raise slogans even as the speaker continued with official business.
While Finance Minister Raghavji presented the first supplementary budget of the current financial year, 12 official bills were passed without debate.
Amid ruckus in the house, Rohani asked the ministers to lay down reports and allow Home Minister Himmat Kothari to reply to the adjournment motion on riots, notice for which was given by Arif Aqueel of the Congress and others.
Later, the speaker adjourned the house for the day.
