Camilla does a Diana in army camouflage

London : Duchess of Cornwall Camilla took part in an army war game wearing a camouflage jacket, evoking memories of a similar royal venture by the late Princess Diana over two decades ago.

Camilla, 60, did not flinch from the weighty uniform as she gamely leapt up into a 15-tonne Bulldog armoured vehicle for a spin around Bulford camp in Wiltshire.

She jumped up when the firing began at the war game, but soon settled into an animated chatter with the soldiers.

“Seeing the men in action was a privilege,” she told the Daily Mail. Camilla was at the camp in her role as Royal Colonel of 4th Battalion The Rifles.

After being greeted by Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Jones at the army camp, she presented gallantry awards to a group of soldiers from the 650-strong battalion, which lost four men and suffered 74 casualties in Iraq last year.

The infantry battalion is currently training to take up a role as a Small Scale Focused Intervention Battle Group for deployment towards the end of the year. It is also due to see an operational tour of Afghanistan in late 2009.

Camilla’s spin was similar to another royal incident in 1985, when Princess Diana was given instructions in driving a tank when she visited the Ist Battalion Royal Hampshire Regiment in Berlin.
