Hyderabad : Seeking a major role in defeating Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N. Chandrababu Naidu will be in New Delhi over the weekend to mobilise votes against the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in parliament.
The former Andhra Pradesh chief minister and convenor of the United National Progressive Alliance (UNPA) is in touch with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Left parties and is also trying to bring together smaller parties against the ruling UPA.
During his two-day visit July 19-20, Naidu will coordinate with UNPA constituents, Left parties and others in an attempt to make things difficult for the UPA government in the trial of strength.
The Congress-led UPA will be facing a trust vote in parliament on July 22 on the issue of the India-US nuclear deal that has led to the Left parties withdrawing their support to the government.
Naidu is keen to bring the BSP in the UNPA fold since its rival Samajwadi Party joined hands with the Congress party.
The TDP chief, who is in Khammam as part of a statewide campaign, Sunday received a phone call from BSP chief Mayawati. The two leaders discussed the strategy to be adopted in parliament.
TDP, a key constituent of UNPA, is trying to rope in new partners after the Samajwadi Party decided to support the UPA government. TDP sources said it was in this context that his talks with Uttar Pradesh chief minister were significant.
Naidu, whose party has six members in Lok Sabha, also had a telephonic talk with Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Prakash Karat and other leaders of the Left parties.
The TDP had distanced itself from the Left after it backed the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. However, the two parties had drawn closer after the TDP snapped ties with the ruling Congress in Andhra Pradesh.
