Nepali PM: Days for strikes over

Kathmandu : Nepali Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala said all should devote to development and the days for bandh (general strike) and strike are over, local newspaper The Rising Nepal reported on Tuesday.

“The days for bandh and strike are obsolete and all should devote to development,” Prime Minister Koirala said when laying foundation stone of District Development Committee in Nepali capital Kathmandu on Monday morning.

He said the district development committees (DDC) are the institutes which work as the foundation of democracy. “The DDC is the place public have direct contact, and are provided services, therefore, construction of DDC building is laying foundation of democracy,” Koirala said.

The construction of the building has been delayed for three years due to bandh and strike.

PM Koirala added, “New constitution and this building should be launched at the same period.” Construction of this building should be complete within one and half year, PM reiterated, while the tenure of the Constituent Assembly is expected to end in May, 2010.

Nepal, almost every week, saw frequent bandhs or strikes in the past years.
