New Delhi : If Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati’s smiles are any indication, she seems to have done a ‘social engineering’ of the numbers game in the national capital and has emerged a king-maker for the front against the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA).
After her first appearance with communist leader Prakash Karat last week before mediapersons outside her house to announce that the Left and BSP were joining hands against the UPA ahead of the crucial trust vote July 22, Mayawati has busied herself with the singular aim of ensuring the downfall of the government.
She did the same this week with Telengana Rashtriya Samiti (TRS) leader K. Chandrashekhar Rao when both came along.
First, she walked out with Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Ajit Singh Sunday after both leaders met at her residence. Within minutes of that meeting, Ajit Singh dumped the UPA offer to side with the BSP-Left combine.
The move ensured that the UPA was three MPs short of their calculations to get to the figure of 271 MPs needed to win the trust vote.
Later in the day, Mayawati reached the residence of former prime minister and Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) leader H.D. Deve Gowda to seek what she called his “blessings and help”. She got these in plenty when Deve Gowda, whose party has three MPs, walked up with her to address the media and announce that he was not supporting the UPA.
Mayawati, who has openly spelled out her ambition to be prime minister of the country, does not seem very far from realising it if she continues to pull the rug from under the feet of the UPA and its supporters ahead of the trust vote.
