Hyderabad : The Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), which has one member in Lok Sabha, decided Sunday to back the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in Tuesday’s trust vote in parliament.
MIM Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi told a news conference that his party would support the government but would also voice its “strong reservations on the impact the Indo-US nuclear deal would have on foreign policy”.
The MIM, which is part of UPA, said it considered the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) the biggest threat to Muslims and to prevent it from coming to power it had decided to vote for the UPA government despite reservations on the nuclear deal.
“At no cost we like to see the BJP coming to power with L.K. Advani as prime minister, who is the main accused in Babri Masjid demolition case,” he said.
“What the US has done in Afghanistan and Iraq and its policy on Palestine is condemnable but as far as I am concerned my immediate adversary is Advani,” he said.
The MIM leader said history would never forgive CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat for creating a political crisis and helping the BJP to come to power.
“If Advani becomes the prime minister, it will be a threat to the identity, development and personal law of Muslims,” he said.
Owaisi alleged that CPI-M and BJP were two sides of same coin.
“The BJP is open enemy of Muslims while the CPI-M’s hatred is shrouded in its ideology. The enemy number one is Advani and enemy number two is Karat,” he said, referring to the violence in Nandigram and the poor economic and educational conditions of Muslims in West Bengal.
“We detest the fact that the Muslim card is being played on an international agreement. They are saying the deal is against Muslims. This is cynical manipulation of Muslims. Why do they not say the agreement is in favour or against Hindus, Dalits or backward classes?” he asked.
