Abbas threatens to withdraw forces from Nablus

By Xinhua,

Ramallah : Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas threatened to withdraw his security forces from the West Bank city of Nablus due to ongoing Israeli raids there, a Fatah lawmaker said on Tuesday.

During a meeting with Fatah members in Ramallah, “President Abbas said he will withdraw the Palestinian security forces if the incursions continue,” said Najat Abu Baker, a Fatah member of the parliament.

Abbas will hand over his plan to Israel during an upcoming meeting between the Palestinian and Israeli negotiation crews, Abu Baker added.

“The president is displeased with the Israeli violations and he considers that these procedures destroy the peace process,” the legislator said.

Israel recently launched a crackdown against Hamas-linked charities and institutions in the West Bank, mostly in Nablus, where tens of organizations were shut down.

Israel also carries out nearly daily incursions into West Bank cities and arrests Palestinians who the Jewish state said are wanted by its intelligence services.

The Palestinian security forces were deployed in Nablus in November under an agreement between Israel and the Palestinian government aimed to restore order and security there.

Tens of Fatah militants have handed over their weapons to the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) as part of the deal.
