Beijing transport services on high alert ahead of Olympics

By Xinhua,

Beijing : China has put on high alert air, rail and long-distance bus services in the capital as the Olympic Games approach.

Armed police with sniffer dogs began round the clock patrols Monday at the capital’s four railway stations, including a new one in the southern district to be opened shortly as well as the Beijing International Airport.

At the Beijing West Railway Station, a major terminal, passengers have been asked to taste any liquids they carry or put a sealed one under a special detector handset to identify its contents.

Baggage was being checked and X-rayed and banned items were being confiscated.

The Beijing airport started security checks at every entry point for possible explosives and air passengers were required to open small carry bags with them for inspection.

Inspection staff at Beijing’s 10 long-distance bus stations confiscated some banned items, including alcohol and ethane.

Bomb blasts, suspected to be acts of subversion, on two passenger buses killed at least two people in the southwestern city of Kunming Monday.
