‘N-deal will open opportunities for 400 companies’

New Delhi : The India-US nuclear deal will give huge technological advantage to Indian nuclear energy industry, and thereby lead to efficient and cheaper power production in the country, said an industry forum leader here Tuesday.

“The go-ahead to the nuclear deal will trigger the participation of some 200-odd companies that already have the capability to operate, and maintain nuclear plants,” said Amit Mitra, secretary general of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

“We expect 200 more medium and small companies to get into the act as ancillary producers to the big companies, thereby giving a new direction to efficient and cheaper power production in the country,” he added.

He also expressed optimism that the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA), with the support of its new allies, will push through several reform programmes like the insurance and pension bills and disinvestment in public sector companies, which were put on hold because of the Left parties’ opposition.

“Once the trust vote is over, it should be possible to unleash a flurry of reforms that had been put on the back-burner because of the opposition from the left parties,” Mitra said.
