3,000 more policemen deployed in Delhi

By IANS,

New Delhi : Delhi Police sounding a high alert Sunday deployed additional 3,000 policemen to foil any terror attack in the wake of the serial terror blasts in Bangalore and Ahmedabad that killed at least 46 people.

“The city is on a high alert and in the wake of the recent terror blasts we are deploying additional 30 companies in the city to check on suspicious people and articles,” Delhi Police spokesman Rajan Bhagat told IANS.

“We urge people not to panic. If they find or come across any suspicious article, they should report the same to the police immediately,” he said.

Bhagat said officials deployed with the police control room and the Special Branch have been specifically briefed to remain more vigilant.

The decision was taken after Delhi Police Commissioner Y.S. Dadwal convened a meeting of his senior police official to review the security situation in the capital.

According to senior police officials, Home Minister Shivraj Patil late Saturday reviewed the security in the national capital and issued directions.

Bhagat said additional police personnel were deployed along with bomb disposal squads at Delhi Metro stations, railway stations and inter-state bus terminals.

The police erected road barricades at various intersections and sniffer dogs were deployed at railway stations. Metal detectors were in place at entry points in busy markets and security agencies were keeping a close watch over all VIP areas.

Bangalore was hit by eight blasts Friday, killing a woman. The next day, Gujarat’s main city of Ahmedabad was rocked by 20 blasts that killed at least 45 people.
