Bangladesh govt working to establish “sustainable democracy”: Senior Official

Dhaka, Bangladesh : Commerce and Education Adviser of Bangladesh caretaker government Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman has said the government is working with all its sincerity to establish a sustainable democratic process in the country.

“The caretaker government has concentrated its efforts on establishing a sustainable democratic process,” he said while presenting a keynote paper at a seminar on “Bangladesh: Towards a Sustainable Democracy” at the prestigious Royal Institute for International Affairs in London Friday.

He said a national dialogue was underway between the government and the political parties while the authorities undertook all necessary steps for staging a credible general election.

Several high-profile members of the House of Commons and House of Lords, and representatives of British Foreign Commonwealth Office, DFID, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Commonwealth Secretariat and University faculties joined the seminar.

“We are pledge-bound to stage the polls in December this year and working towards that end,” Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman said

The Election Commission, he said, for the first time in Bangladesh’s history prepared an electronic electoral roll of 8.05 lakh voters which has been appreciated even in the international arena, he also said. (One Lakh:100,000)
