Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh): The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) on 26th July arrested Maulana Abdul Mateen, city’s renowned personality and active teacher of Jamia Salafia Banaras, from a street in the city.
STF in fact was helping Jaipur police which had come to the city as part of investigation into the Jaipur bombings and wanted to arrest Maulana Abdul Mateen. He was alleged to be suspected in the bombings that killed 60 people in May this year.
As soon as the news of his arrest spread, people came to street to protest against the arrest. The streets in Madanpura and Rewri Talab areas were crowded with people so much so that life in the area came to standstill.
Maulana Abdul Mateen, who resides in Madanpura, also runs an NGO that provides health services to the poor. He is popular in the city. To protest against the arrest, people shuttered down their shops and roads were blocked.
Sensing trouble ahead, heavy deployment of RAF and PAC forces was made in the sensitive area.
Secretary and other officials of the madrasa met DM and SSP. First they showed ignorance about the case but succumbing to the pressure they late in the night announced that Maulana has been released in Kanpur and he will be back in the city next morning.
