Pranab to brief home ministry on Gorkhaland stir

By IANS,

Kolkata : External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee will update the home ministry on the turmoil on the Gorkhaland issue in West Bengal’s hill district Darjeeling.

“We all know about the Gorkhaland agitation continuing in Darjeeling. I have discussed the issue in a meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee,” Mukherjee told reporters here Sunday.

Darjeeling again flared up Friday after a Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) activist was killed by a bullet allegedly fired from the house of rival Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) leader Dipak Gurung.

Following the violence, GNLF supremo Subhash Ghising left his hill residence and shifted base to the plains of Siliguri.

“I will give the updates to the home ministry once I reach Delhi,” Mukherjee said after Bhattacharjee called on him.

Mukherjee said the issue of soil erosion by flood waters of rivers over a vast stretch of northern West Bengal was also discussed during the talks.

“We exchanged views on river embankment so as to expedite the process,” he said.
