Congress to hold farmers’ rally in Mayawati’s hometown

New Delhi : The Congress will hold a farmers’ rally in Chief Minister Mayawati’s hometown in western Uttar Pradesh Tuesday to protest allegedly forced acquisition of land in the town.

“Senior Congress leaders will participate in the rally to protest against the coercive acquisition of land belonging to thousands of farmers in Mayawati’s hometown Badalpur,” Congress Spokesman Manish Tiwari said.

He said, according to revenue records as on June 30, the Uttar Pradesh government had issued notices to acquire 230.554 hectares of land in Badalpur and 142.160 hectares in Saadupur.

“The land has been acquired to create a picnic spot in Badalpur. It will uproot 2,500 families in these villages. We demand that farmers be paid proper compensation and all their claims be settled before the land acquisition,” Tiwari said.

A host of top Congress leaders, including Congress general secretary and in-charge of Uttar Pradesh affairs Digvijay Singh, state Congress president Rita Bhahugna Joshi and Congress MP Sachin Pilot participate in the rally, the spokesman added.
