Venice : The Municipal Council of Venice decided on Tuesday to grant honorary citizenship to the spiritual leader of Tibet, the Dalai Lama, expressing solidarity with his people’s cause.
The relevant decree was issued with a majority support during an extraordinary session.
A statement pointed out that the symbolic step is aimed to express strong solidarity with the Tibetan people in their plight to demand respect for their human rights.
The statement stressed the city’s commitment to cultural and religious dialogue, noting this particular gesture followed a petition signed by 1,500 of the city’s inhabitants and was approved by 27 council members.
