Beirut : A suspect suicide bomber was killed Saturday at a Lebanese army checkpoint near Lebanon’s largest Palestinian camp, Al Manar TV reported.
A Palestinian wrapped with a belt of explosives was shot and killed by Lebanese soldiers at the entrance of the Palestinian camp of Ain el-Helweh on the outskirts of the southern city of Sidon, said the report.
“The Palestinian was driving his car when army soldiers stopped him, but he kept running towards the checkpoint, and he was shot by the army, only to discover that he was wrapping himself with an explosive belt to blow up the army checkpoint,” it said.
At dawn Saturday, an explosion at Lebanese army intelligence position in Akkar killed one soldier.
In May 2007, the Lebanese army was engaged in fierce battle which lasted several months with Islamist groups of Fatah al-Islamat the Palestinian camp of Nahr el-Bared, north of the country.
