Ranchi : Jharkhand’s forest department is planning to put on display in a museum the tusks of a rogue elephant, named Laden by the villagers.
The tusker was shot dead by the security forces Friday after it was declared a rogue by the forest department as it had killed 11 people in past two months.
The jumbo was killed near Dungriyatar village of Bokaro district, around 160 km from Ranchi. Security personnel had to fire over 40 bullets to kill the tusker that had spread terror in the area.
“We will seek permission from the higher authorities to showcase the tusks of the killed elephant. We are planning to put the tusks in a museum of Betla Tiger Project situated in Palamau district,” Raviranjan, district forest officer of Bokaro district, told IANS by telephone. He said: “The tusk is presently in our possession.”
When the tusker was killed, a confrontation took place between the forest officials and the villagers over possession of the tusks. The villagers wanted the tusks to be handed over to them but the forest officials succeeded in taking their possession.
Two elephants were electrocuted in Dimna area of Dalma sanctuary of Jamshedpur district Monday. The forest officials are also planning to showcase the tusks of these elephants in Betla Tiger Project.
