Floods kill 18 in Sri Lanka

By Xinhua,

Colombo : At least 18 people have been killed while four people have gone missing since some parts of Sri Lanka were hit by heavy rains last Friday, relief officials said Tuesday.

Eight districts have been hit by floods and landslides caused by the heavy rains since Friday with some 292,000 people being displaced, officials from the Disaster Management Center said.

The southern district of Kalutara was the worst hit district with over 118,000 people being displaced.

Sirisoma Lokuvithana, a state administrative official in the Kalutara district said flood victims are now faced with food shortages due to the inability of relief officials to reach some areas.

Most of the roads remain submerged while communication facilities and transport remain disrupted.

Sri Lankan Air Force and Navy have been deployed to provide relief and rescue the trapped people.

The government is providing dry rations and cooked food to the victims.

Meanwhile, the weathermen said that inclement weather conditions are likely to continue for a few more days.
