Ghaziabad : Rajesh Talwar, arrested for the alleged murder of his teenaged daughter Aarushi and domestic help last month, was Thursday remanded in 14 days’ judicial custody. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), probing the sensational double murder, told the special court that they did not require him any more for questioning.
The CBI produced the dentist before Special Judge (CBI) Sapna Mishra’s court in Ghaziabad. The court took Talwar in to judicial custody and sent him to Dasna jail.
The CBI in its application before the court stated that “the agency does not further require any custody remand of Dr Talwar, therefore it is submitting the person before the court”.
Suresh Batra, the CBI lawyer, processed the application on behalf of the probe agency before the court.
The special court then took Talwar to judicial custody. His wife Nupur, brother and other family members were present in the court at the time, but no one spoke to the media.
Earlier, the agency had demanded five days’ custody remand of Talwar, telling the court that “Talwar was not cooperating in the investigation”. The defence lawyer, Satish Tamta, had opposed the CBI plea for further remand. The special judge granted two days’ remand to CBI ending 5 p.m. Thursday.
The CBI had taken Talwar to his colleague Anita Durrani’s residence in Noida as well as to Haridwar, where he had gone to immerse his daughter’s ashes.
Fourteen-year-old Aarushi was found dead in her Jal Vayu Vihar apartment with her throat slit May 16. The police initially named domestic help Hemraj the main accused, but backtracked after his body was found on the terrace of the apartment a day later.
Police arrested Talwar May 23, accusing him of killing his daughter in a fit of rage as he objected to her closeness to Hemraj. The police had said at that time that he first killed Hemraj and then his daughter.
The case was handed over to the CBI Sunday after large-scale condemnation of the way in which the Noida police had bad-mouthed Aarushi and her father. The investigating officer of the case had also been changed thrice.
So far, the CBI has interrogated five people, including Talwar, his dentist wife Nupur Talwar and Durrani.
The agency has also interrogated the Talwars’ driver Umesh Sharma. He claims to have seen Aarushi having dinner with her family in their apartment on the night of May 15. The Talwars’ maid Bharti has also been questioned.
