Santiago : The Chilean Justice ministry has said that detentions of people under 18 have increased by 80 percent after the application of the new Law of Adolescent Penal Responsibility.
“During the first 10 months of the law’s validity, military police have detained more than 54,000 teenagers between 14 and 17, an increase of 80 percent compared to the number of detentions during the 10 previous months before the law came into effect,” Chilean Justice Minister Carlos Maldonado said Wednesday.
“Up to May 7, the justice system received 25,000 penal causes. The crimes against property are the most common among transgressors,” Maldonado added.
