Myanmar to assist education in cyclone-hit region

Yangon : Myanmar authorities will provide assistance to the students who lost their parents in the deadly cyclone Nargis early last month for enabling them to continue pursuing of education till completed, state-run newspaper The New Light of Myanmar reported Saturday.

Universities and colleges students who had lost their parents in the tropical cyclone will be assisted for learning education till completed and basic education level students who have difficulty to continue receiving education due to losses of one parent or both parents in the cyclone will also be provided assistance, the paper said.

Meanwhile, the government will establish orphanages in Pyapon district and Labutta in Ayeyawaddy division for taking the responsibilities of the orphans in education, health and basic needs, it said.

Deadly tropical cyclone Nargis, which occurred over the Bay of Bengal, hit five divisions and states — Ayeyawaddy, Yangon, Bago,Mon and Kayin on May 2 and 3, of which Ayeyawaddy and Yangon inflicted the heaviest casualties and massive infrastructural damage.

Myanmar estimated the damages and losses caused by the storm at10.67 billion U.S. dollars with 5.5 million people affected.

The storm has killed 77,738 people and left 55,917 missing and 19,359 injured, according to official-released death toll.
