Melbourne : Spin bowling coach Terry Jenner is worried that Australia’s plan to blood young spinners in the away cricket series against India might backfire.
Jenner feels that young spinners tend to struggle on Indian pitches and often return home having taking backward steps in their development.
“Every time we take young spinners away to the sub-continent they come back as medium pacers,” Jenner was quoted as saying in The Daily Telegraph.
“Indian pitches and to some degree Pakistani pitches play low therefore they quicken the pace and bowl more wicket to wicket. It’s a concern for me to take a young spinner there. Shene Warne was lucky, he went to Sri Lanka on his first overseas tour instead of going to say India,” he added.
Beau Casson and Dan Cullen are being tipped as the spinners to be picked for Australia’s Indian tour later this year.
Jenner, who coached Shane Warne, also believes that Stuart MacGill must abort any plans to continue playing for New South Wales (NSW) and quit cricket altogether.
MacGill shocked the cricket community with his retirement midway during the second Test against the West Indies last Sunday but is still open to play for NSW in domestic cricket.
“I hear he is going to play for NSW and I say why? It’s over,” said Jenner on MacGill.
“The ideal thing would be for him now to make way, he’s had his moment and it didn’t quite work I think probably because his wrist never really recovered. These guys have got to learn to be four-day bowlers. Dot-ball bowlers aren’t four-day bowlers.”
Jenner was quick to warn that a replacement for Warne, MacGill and Brad Hogg – Australia’s topline spinners who have all retired in the past 18 months – would not appear overnight but is adamant the future is going to be “terrific” for the Test side.
