Syrian president to visit India next week

Damascus : Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad will visit India next week, the first such mission by a Syrian president to New Delhi since 1978.

According to the Syrian daily newspaper, “Al-Watan,” in its edition published on Sunday, Al-Assad, to be accompanied by the First Lady, Asmaa, will visit the Asian country as art of a state plan of openness towards east Asian countries, and with the aim of enhancing commercial and economic cooperation between Syria and these countries.

The newspaper added meetings between the Syrian president and the Indian leaders would tackle political topics, specially the Middle East, besides economic issues to encourage investments and boost trade exchange.

In a related topic, the daily mentioned that Al-Assad would also visit Libya this week as a part of a tour including Kuwait the United Arab Emirates (UAE) — as the president of the current Arab League summit.

Al-Assad’s planned visit to Libya coincided with a call by Tripoli to hold an Arab summit to discuss the proposed European-Mediterranean Union, yet sources stated that the holding of this expected summit “remained a topic of consultations” among the Arab states, currently.
