Mubarak met Abbas on Palestinian issue

By Xinhua,

Cairo : Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak held talks on Monday with his visiting Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas on the latest developments of the Palestinian-Israeli talks and inter-Palestinian relations.

The two leaders probed efforts to push forward the peace process and boost the unity of the Palestinian people, said Egypt’s official MENA news agency.

Abbas briefed Mubarak on his call for a comprehensive national dialogue among various Palestinian groups and the result of his recent meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert last week, according to MENA.

On Wednesday, Abbas said he is ready to talk with Hamas in order to resume national dialogue and end the division between the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

Talks with Mubarak also touched on means of reaching a Palestinian-Israeli ceasefire, Abbas told reporters after the meeting.

Egypt has been mediating a truce between Israel and Palestinian militant groups but the talks hadn’t yet achieved any tangible progress so far.

Meanwhile, as for the Palestinian-Israeli peace talks, few tangible results have been achieved since the resumption of the negotiations at the U.S.-sponsored Annapolis conference last November.

Abbas arrived here on Sunday night from Saudi Arabia. He wrapped up the visit to Egypt and left here later Monday after talks with President Mubarak.
