By Xinhua,
Mianyang (China) : A strong aftershock was felt in the Tangjiashan “quake lake” area in China’s Sichuan province Monday morning and authorities were studying its impact on the swollen lake.
A Xinhua reporter who was present at the time of the tremor said over phone there was no apparent damage to the embankment of the lake created by the devastating earthquake of March 12 in the southwestern province.
The magnitude of the aftershock was not defined by the geological office but was milder than Sunday’s 4.8 tremors that caused big landslides on the mountain surrounding the quake lake.
Army engineers and police have been working to drain the swelling lake, which poses the danger of flooding downstream.
China is still on the alert as the water level in the lake reached 742.58 metres in spite of a spillway dug by army engineers.
