Nishad is third minister ordered to quit by Mayawati

By IANS,

Lucknow : Jamuna Nishad is the third minister in Uttar Pradesh to go out in disgrace after being accused of committing crime. On Tuesday, he was arrested over a policeman’s killing.

Anand Sen Yadav had to resign in November last year as the minister of state for food processing over his alleged involvement in the kidnapping and murder of Shashi, a Dalit girl from Faizabad.

The 24-year-old was a third year law student in Faizabad when she went missing Oct 22. She was later found murdered.

On Sunday, the police in Kanpur arrested Seema Azad, the second of the two prime accused in Shashi’s murder. Azad, a classmate of Sashi at the Saket Degree College in Faizabad, was Monday remanded to 14-day police custody.

The other accused, Vijay Sen, the driver of Anand Sen Yadav, surrendered in a Faizabad court. Police sources told IANS that Azad’s interrogation would be crucial to fix Yadav’s involvement in the murder.

Former minister for water resources and land development Raghunath Prasad Shankhwar was forced to resign in September when his name cropped up in a Rs.5 million drug purchase scam.

The Economic Offences Wing of the Uttar Pradesh Police is still probing the scam, which dates back to the time when Shankhwar was a chief medical officer in Barabanki district.
