Srinagar : About 1.8 million voter identity cards in Jammu and Kashmir would be re-verified to prevent their possible misuse, said an official.
State’s chief electoral officer B.R. Sharma said in an interview to a newspaper Wednesday that two million new voter identity cards would be issued ahead of the forthcoming assembly elections here.
“We will verify 17 to 18 lakh (1.7-1.8 million) identity cards as the electoral photo identity card (EPIC) numbers of these cards did not match our records,” said Sharma.
The police had claimed recovery of around a dozen voter identity cards from slain militants three months back.
“According to the new procedure, the photograph of the voter will be scanned on the new identity card, which will also have a hologram. The EPIC number of the card will be saved in a separate folder and it will be kept in our records.
“With this procedure there are zero chances of misuse of the voter identity cards,” he said.
There would be a total of 6,481,143 voters in the state for the forthcoming assembly elections.
“Around 4.50 lakh (450,000) new voters have been added,” Sharma said.
