New Delhi : Justice delayed is justice denied — but prevail it did for a retired college principal who was acquitted Wednesday of a 26-year-old assault charge.
The Delhi High Court Wednesday acquitted Kartar Singh, who retired as principal of Delhi University’s Ramjas College, and five others of the charge of assaulting Dalip, a lecturer from the same college.
The case dates back to Feb 16, 1982 when Dalip left for home from the college and was assaulted by some men near North Delhi’s Civil Lines.
He was taken to Bara Hindu Rao Hospital and discharged after first aid.
He filed a complaint against Singh and five others as he suspected their involvement in the incident.
The trial court acquitted all of them April 1987 giving benefit of doubt, as the statement made by Dalip was controversial.
Delhi Police filed an appeal in the High Court which, after 21 long years, acquitted the six Wednesday.
Justice G.S. Sistani upheld the judgement passed by the trial court and maintained that the case is not clear and has some vital missing links.
