Indian trio reaches second round of Singapore Open badminton

Singapore : Indian shuttlers walked a tightrope to reach the second round of the Singaopre Open badminton tournament Wednesday.

Anup Sridhar and Arvind Bhat in men’s while Saina Nehwal in women’s singles won their first round matches after seeing off stiff resistance from the respective opponents.

National champion Sridhar beat Chinese Taipei’s Yu Hsin Hsieh 22-20, 19-21, 21-11 and will now face Sairul Amar Ayob of Malaysia Thursday.

Arvind fought back to beat fifth seed Pole Przemyslaw Wacha of Poland 13-21, 21-13, 21-14 and will meet Joachim Persson of Denmark next.

Nehwal got the better of Jie Yao of Netherlands 21-19, 19-21, 21-13. She will meet Juan Gu of Singapore next.

Nehwal, however, went down in the doubles match. She and Anna Rice of Canada lost to eighth seeded Dane pair of Kamilla Rytter Juhl and Lena Frier Kristiansen 18-21, 13-21.
