Judicial remand for former Uttar Pradesh minister

By IANS,

Lucknow : A city court Wednesday remanded disgraced former Uttar Pradesh minister Jamuna Nishad, who allegedly led a mob attack that killed a policeman, in 14 days of judicial custody.

Nishad was arrested Tuesday, three days after he led a protesting mob that killed a police constable leading to his own ouster from the government.

“He was produced in front of the CJM (chief judicial magistrate) Wednesday and was immediately sent to the Deoria district jail,” a police source said.

A legislator from Pipraich in Gorakhpur district, who served as minister of state for fisheries, Nishad is accused of leading a mob to the Maharajganj police station Saturday night when one of his supporters opened fire shooting dead constable Krishnanand Rai.

The slain man had come out to see what the commotion was all about when he was hit by a bullet and collapsed. He died in hospital.
