Yangon : Myanmar would build temporary cyclone relief shelters in 500 villages in the country’s disaster-prone areas as part of a quick response system to natural calamities, a media report said Saturday.
The project would cost around $15 million which would be built by the Myanmar Engineers’ Society (MES) in collaboration with the Geological Science Society (GSS), the weekly journal Voice quoted GSS officials as saying.
The MES will design the project. A sample cyclone shelter would be constructed at a village in the Irrawaddy region.
Experts from Japan, Bangladesh, Pakistan and India would be consulted on the techniques used in these countries for similar projects.
Each village would have a storm shelter, water distribution system, solar-energy power and cyclone-resistant apartments, the report said.
Cyclone Nargis, which hit five divisions of the country May 2-3, had devastated the region, killing over 77,000 people and wounding thousands.
The worst affected regions include Irrawaddy, Yangon, Bago, Mon and Kayin.
