Mumbai : Brabourne Stadium will host a Test match after 35 years when Indian play England in the Platinum Jubilee Test this winter.
As the Mumbai Cricket Association’s (MCA) Wankhede Stadium is undergoing large-scale renovation for the 2011 World Cup, the Mumbai Cricket Association will enter into a three-year agreement with the Cricket Club of India, owners of the Brabourne Stadium, for hosting international cricket at the historic venue.
An MCA spokesman said the state association and the CCI have agreed to share clubhouse tickets on a 50-50 ratio and a formal agreement is likely to be signed on June 18.
“The discussion part is over and the CCI authorities have agreed to keep 50 per cent of the club house tickets to themselves and give the rest to us (MCA).
Before the state association came up with the Wankhede Stadium, all international cricket used to be played at the Brabourne Stadium. A dispute over allocation of tickets led to the MCA constructing its own stadium, named after the state association president and Maharashtra finance minister S. K. Wankhede.
Seventeen Tests were played at the Brabourne Stadium, the first in 1948 and the last in 1973 with Wankhede Stadium hosted the first Test in 1975 against the West Indies. International cricket returned to Brabourne in 1989, more as a One-Day venue and the 2006 Champions Trophy final was played there.
