Kolkata : A temporary bridge over the Sudani river, connecting West Bengal’s North Dinajpur district with the rest of the state, collapsed Sunday. Nobody was injured in the incident.
The river is near Karandighi town of the district. District officials said the bridge was constructed after the Bailey bridge, a part of national Highway No. 34 connecting north and south Bengal, gave away Aug 22 last year.
“This bridge was a temporary one made of hume pipes and boulders. It collapsed Sunday morning. No one was injured,” said an official.
“But since communication was cut off after the incident, many trucks were stranded for hours. Engineers of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) are investigating the reason behind the collapse,” said the official.
Vehicles will have to take a detour of 18 km or use the Barasat-Birbhum-Md Bazar-Purnea road, about 70 km long, till a new bridge is constructed.
