By Xinhua,
Harare : Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has said the ruling Zanu-PF was prepared to go to war if the opposition won the presidential election run-off as that meant losing the independence that the country won in 1980.
Anyone who seeks to undermine the land reform program in Zimbabwe is seeking a war since land is the bedrock of the politics of the country from time immemorial, Mugabe said on Saturday when speaking at the burial of the late Lieutenant General Amoth Chingombe at the national shrine.
“Anyone who seeks to undermine our land reform, itself a bed rock of our politics from time immemorial, seeks and gets war,” he said.
Mugabe said the ruling party was very clear on the issue of defending the country’s sovereignty.
The late Lt Gen Chingombe, who passed away on Monday, was given the honor of hoisting the Zimbabwean flag for the first time on April 17, 1980 when the country gained its independence. He was commissioned to the rank of Brigadier General in 1981 and retired in 2005 after attaining the rank of Major General.
On retirement, he was promoted to the rank of Lt Gen in recognition of his outstanding contribution and dedication to defending the sovereignty of Zimbabwe and promoting regional peace.
