Sinha to demit office on June 25

By IANS,

Srinagar : Jammu and Kashmir Governor S.K. Sinha will demit office June 25, according to a Raj Bhavan statement issued Sunday evening.

“The governor has accepted some requests by different organizations for his farewell functions in Srinagar and Jammu. This will be done concurrently with packing his belongings at both places,” Raj Bhavan spokesman Madan Mantoo said.

Mantoo described as baseless the “speculations persistently being made by a section of the press, despite repeated denials, that Sinha wants to stay on in the state and has been lobbying for it with various authorities and individuals”.

“Sinha has never made any request for extension or staying back in Srinagar as is being repeatedly made out by a section of the media,” the spokesman added.

The state’s Finance Minister Tariq Hameed Kara told a local news agency that Sinha’s continuation was creating “constitutional and legal problems”.

“It is unprecedented that a governor shows reluctance to move out even after the issuance of a presidential notification appointing N.N. Vohra as his successor,” Kara said.
