Madurai : Kerala’s Renjith Maheshwari and West Bengal’s Hari Shankar Roy disappointed on the opening day of the 48th National Senior Inter-State Athletics Championship here.
Triple jumper Maheshwari, who has qualified for the Beijing Olympics, came second with a jump of 16.21 metres behind Jharkhand’s Amarjeet Singh (16.67 mts) here Sunday. Maheshwari’s jump was way behind his 17.04 metres at the Asian Grand Prix in Guwahati last year. His statemate Bibu Matthew was third with a jump of 15.90 mts.
In the high jump, Roy who is expected to get the Olympic qualification mark this season was nowhere near his best and failed to finish on the podium. Kerala’s Prince Jose bagged the gold and Tamil Nadu’s B. Elakumaran and Benedict Starli finished second and third respectively.
