Kolkata waterlogged due to incessant rains

By IANS,

Kolkata : Vehicles moved at a meandering pace while pedestrians waded their way through the waterlogged streets of Kolkata Tuesday, the third day of incessant rainfall in the city.

“The rainfall is due to a depression generated over the Bay of Bengal. From Sunday to Tuesday morning there has been 11 cm of rainfall here. The rains are likely to continue for the next 24 hours,” G.C. Debnath, director of the Regional Meteorological Centre here told IANS Tuesday evening.

Many parts of north, central and south Kolkata were marooned due to the rains.

Residents of Alipur Bodyguard Lines in south Kolkata used boats to travel from one place to another.

There was a scarcity of drinking water in most areas since the tube wells and pumping stations were inundated.

“The entire ground floor of our building has gone under water. The tube wells on the roads are under water too. The sewage and drainage facilities of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation are so poor that even if the rain stops it will take a couple of days to clear the water logging,” said Nirupama Sarkar, a resident of Behala in south Kolkata.

Few students could attend their schools and colleges and office-goers had a tough time making it to their work places.

There were severe traffic jams too.

Sources at the Calcutta Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) said there was a possibility of frequent power cuts as transformers in many places were water-logged. Besides, cables have been snapped at places due to incessant rains.
