Hyderabad : The Andhra Pradesh Police Friday claimed to have busted a fake currency racket with the arrest of four people and seizure of counterfeit notes with a face value of Rs.3.6 million.
The Hyderabad city police picked up two people in Chaipara in West Bengal near Bangladesh border Thursday.
The two members of the gang, identified only as Naba, 28, and Saha, 35, were brought here in the early hours of Friday.
A special team of the police commissioner’s Task Force went to West Bengal based on the information provided by two people arrested in Hyderabad with fake currency notes.
Police sources said the two people, brought from West Bengal, were being questioned to find out if they had any links with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and Pakistan-based terror groups.
Police suspect that Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) was behind the racket as part of its attempts to weaken India’s economy. The officials suspect that terror groups were using the Bangladesh route to bring in fake notes into the country.
This is the second major fake currency racket to be unearthed in the city in less than a year. Police had Aug 25 last year busted an international racket and seized fake notes with a face value of Rs.23.6 million.
Six people, including a United Arab Emirates citizen Alkaz Khamis Obaid Ali, were arrested in connection with the racket. The gang was alleged to have links with Dawood Ibrahim. Police had then claimed that the fake notes were brought via Dubai.
