28 more survivors of sunken ferry in Philippines found

By KUNA,

Tokyo : More than 28 people were recovered from a ferry carrying nearly 750 people that was overturned on Saturday by strong waves caused by Typhoon Fengshen off Philippine’s central province of Romblon, local media reported Monday, citing the commandant of the Philippine Coast Guard.

“At the same time, another body was recovered, raising the number of deaths from the ill-fated M/V Princess of the Stars to five,” daily “Inquirer” quoted Vice Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo as saying.

The number of people rescued now stands at 32. On Sunday, four fatalities and four survivors, who were washed ashore, were recovered, the daily said. The ship, carrying 626 passengers and 121 crew, suffered engine trouble and was battered by big waves caused Typhoon Fengshen on Saturday evening.

Two Coast Guard rescue ships, three Navy vessels, and two tugboats from owner Sulpicio Lines have been searching the area around the ship, the newspaper said.

Meanwhile, the death toll in the central province of Iloilo alone caused by the typhoon reached 97 and 122 remained missing as of 10 a.m. (0000) GMT Monday, the paper added.
